• D.A.R.E. Program

  The DARE Kir (Drug Abuse Resistance Education Keepin' It Real) is the newest development of the DARE program delivered to grade 5 students by peace officers. The Kir curriculum for grade 7 has been present for a period of time and after studies about the program were conducted and proved to be amongst the top 3 overall federally-funded prevention program by the National Registry of Evidence-based programs and practices, Dr. Hecht developed the grade 5 curriculum, which has now been implemented throughout BC.

  DARE Kir is a 10 lesson curriculum taught by trained classroom teachers (trained peace officers) in 45 minute sessions over 10 weeks. The curriculum is designed based on the Socio-Emotional Learning Theory (SEL). SEL identifies fundamental, basic skills and developmental processes needed for healthy development including: self-awareness and management, responsible decision making, understanding others, relationship and communication skills and handling responsibilities and challenges.

  The 10 lessons are arranges in a scaffolding process, starting with the basics about responsibility and decision making and then building on each other, allowing students to develop their own responses to real life situations.

• Restorative Justice

  

  As part of the RCMP’s commitment to community policing service delivery, the Campbell River RCMP is actively utilizing this alternative to the traditional justice system. Restorative Justice is not a practice itself, but a set of guiding principles. These principles include ensuring the involvement of victims, offenders and communities; seeing crime as people hurting people, not just a breach of statute; and the use of flexible and forward looking approaches.

  The Restorative Justice Forums bring together all those who have been affected by an incident and enable them to discuss it’s impact. Although Restorative Justice is not about punishment, it does strive for a resolution that is agreeable to all. Offenders must accept responsibility for their own actions. They are confronted with how their behavior affected the victim personally- and hear it directly from their victim. Victims are able to express how they have been affected by what has happened, and then see and hear genuine remorse. The conversations are often difficult and emotional, so a neutral impartial facilitator is present to guide the conversation. This enables everyone to return to the community with a sense of closure and optimism for the future.

  This process is not for every offender, there is a strict set of circumstances that must be met for a case to be considered. Police Officers or Crown make the referral to the program. Offenders who take responsibility for their actions, and feel true remorse for the incident, would be forwarded for consideration. The victim must be agreeable, and willing to be involved in a Forum. The facilitator will ultimately decide if the case is suitable.

  RCMP Restorative Justice Program Coordinator, Kristine Atkinson, says “Restorative Justice is based on a philosophy of healing, reparation, and reintegration. It is a program that is very successful in terms of preventing future harm to the community.”

  The PARTY program (Prevent Alcohol and Risk-Related Trauma in Youth) is designed to educate youth about making good choices in life and learning about the consequences of those choices.

• Citizens On Patrol

  Citizens on Patrol are a local community volunteer organization that works under the Community Policing umbrella controlled by our local RCMP Detachment. The group is made up entirely of Campbell River City citizens who are concerned about reducing crime in our community and have at least four hours per month of spare time to donate.

• Victim Services

  Victim Services provides information, referral and support to victims of crime. They can offer information on police and court procedures, court preparation for victims and witnesses of crime and accompaniment to court. They offer referrals to social services and helping agencies and support through the criminal justice system. Victim Services also liaise with the investigator and Crown Council. They can help with information and applications for Crime Victim Assistance Program and also offer short term crisis support.

  Campbell River offers 1 Program Coordinator and 1 program assistant.
