Information regarding lost, stolen and found bicycles.
What do I do if my bike gets stolen?
If you are the victim of a bike theft under $5000 value, you can report it online at: www.bc.rcmp.ca/campbellriver/report
If you don’t have online access, you can report by telephone to a non emergency line at 250-286-6221
You will be asked to provide as much information as possible, such as make, model, colour, serial number, and any other distinguishing features.
What will the police do after I report my bike stolen?
The police will add the information to their computer systems and the officers will then attempt to locate the bike. It is a good idea to check with the pawn shops and advise in your report if you have any suspects or witnesses to the theft.
What happens if my bike is recovered?
If a bike gets turned in, the police will run it against the computer to see if it has been reported stolen and try to find the owner of the bike to return it. The bike is held for 90 days for the owner to claim it. After 90 days, the bike is sold at the Eagles Recovered Bike Program auction.
Many times, the bikes are not returned to their owners as we cannot identify the owner. It is very important to report your bike stolen, even if it is not a high value bike, as many bikes are located but the owner cannot be identified.
What can I do to protect myself?
- Record serial numbers so that they can be added to the police computer records which help identify the bikes owner, should they be recovered. If your bike does not have a serial number, engrave something on the bike, such as your driver’s license number or anything that would uniquely identify it. Phone numbers and addresses are not recommended as they are subject to change.
- Photograph your bike.
- Never leave your bike unlocked, at home or in public. If storing your bike at home, put it in a safe spot with a lock or inside a locked area. In public, use a high quality lock. For extra measures, you could also remove the bike seat or a wheel.
