The City of Campbell River is one of 179 BC local governments that have committed to the BC Climate Action Charter. The Charter requires local governments to take action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, report on community climate initiatives, and become carbon neutral in municipal operations by 2012.
To become carbon neutral in municipal operations requires the City to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as much as possible through energy retrofits to buildings, efficiency upgrades to utilities, fleet upgrades, and other initiatives. Remaining emissions must be offset through investment in projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The City of Campbell River has a Corporate Carbon Neutral Plan that guides our actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The City has also adopted the following targets for reducing our emissions:
- 2012: 10% reduction below 2008 levels
- 2020: 35% reduction below 2008 levels
- 2050: 85% reduction below 2008 levels
