Reducing Wildlife Conflicts FAQS

• How do I limit pest and wildlife contact?

  • Put out bins only on collection day, as close to the scheduled collection time as possible (not the night before).
  • Quickly bring in your garbage, recycling and organics bins after collection, or if the collection is delayed to another day.
  • Clean bins with eco-friendly detergent and/or baking soda to reduce odours.
  • Freeze compost between collection days to reduce attractants.

• Why may I only place waste at the curbside on the day of collection?

  Recycling, Organics and Garbage Regulations Bylaw No. 3950, 2024 states that waste may only be placed at the curbside on the day of collection.

  Waste is a significant bear attractant and when placed curbside overnight, is easily accessed by bears and other wildlife. When bears become accustomed to human food (habitually fed bears) they are more likely to come ever closer to people, houses, and personal property and often become “problem bears”. This pattern jeopardizes human, bear and property safety.

• What are the requirements for multi-family and strata properties?

  Although multi-family and strata properties (apartments, townhouses, and condos), trailer parks and some triplexes and fourplexes do not have waste collection services through the City, they are still required to take reasonable steps to reduce wildlife conflicts by preventing wildlife access to unsecured or improperly stored waste, including garbage, recyclables and food waste.

• Who is responsible for wildlife conflict management?

  The Province of BC is responsible for wildlife management through the Wildlife Act and regulations concerning attracting dangerous wildlife. The City is responsible for local waste stream management, which affects wildlife. Recycling, Organics and Garbage Regulations Bylaw No. 3950, 2024 aligns City waste practices with the wildlife conflict reduction goals of the Wildlife Act.
