The primary purpose for the issuance of a Building Permit is to ensure that all buildings comply with the safety, health, building and zoning requirements of the City of Campbell River and the Province of British Columbia.
The City of Campbell River has prepared packages to assist in understanding the City's Building Permit and Inspection Process. The documents are for general guidance and do not replace bylaws or other legal documents.

If you are planning a residential renovation, addition (or addition of a suite), conversion of use or an ancillary building this is the permit you will require. Please see the first page of the application for requirements.
A permit is required when demolishing any building or structure on site and no person shall commence or continue any demolition of any building or structure unless a building official has issued a valid and subsisting permit for the work.
Any changes to a driveway may require a permit.
- For new homes, the Driveway Permit is taken out as part of the Building Permit.
- For existing homes, if changes to the driveway are desired (new driveway, widen existing driveway etc.) a permit is required.
A permit is required when plumbing any building or structure on site (new or alteration) and no person shall commence or continue any plumbing of any building or structure unless a building official has issued a valid and subsisting permit for the work.
If you are adding or replacing a retaining wall you now need to apply for a Retaining Wall Permit as per 2018 BCBC. Please provide the requested documentation and application.
