• Do I require a building permit for an ancillary (detached) building or shop?

  You will require a permit if the structure will be more than 108 square feet (10 square metres). Before starting design of a project to construct an ancillary building, check the zoning requirements for your lot to determine maximum area, height and lot coverage.

• Can I start my project before the Building Permit has been issued?

  No!  It is unsafe to start construction without a permit and you will be charged double fees and issued a “Stop Work Order” if you do. You may be able to excavate and place pins prior to permit if written approval is granted by a building inspector.
