CITY CELEBRATES LOCAL GOVERNMENT AWARENESS WEEK WITH MAYORS FOR A DAY

Local students sworn in as Mayors for a Day on May 14, 2024.

To celebrate Local Government Awareness Week (May 12 to 18, 2024), the City of Campbell River (the City) reached out to young residents of Campbell River with a Mayor for a Day contest. Local students were asked to share their favourite thing about Campbell River, their suggestions for positive changes and what they would do first if they were Mayor of Campbell River.

Congratulations to Alaina and Benson, who were Campbell River’s Mayors for a Day on May 14, 2024!

When asked about their favourite thing in Campbell River, Alaina said it’s that “I feel safe enough to go for bike rides with just me and my older sister” and Benson highlighted “the skate park at the Sportsplex.” Alaina also told us, “I want to learn about the government and how everything works because I love to learn.”

The young mayors had a busy day in office, touring City facilities and learning about local government. Their terms began when they were sworn in by Acting Corporate Officer Lynsey Daur. Alaina and Benson then met with Mayor Kermit Dahl, before being whisked away on a tour of the Campbell River RCMP detachment and Dogwood Operations Centre. Following lunch with Councillor Susan Sinnott, Alaina and Benson wrapped up the day with a tour of City Hall.

“It was a pleasure to meet Alaina and Benson, and everyone enjoyed welcoming them to the City of Campbell River as our Mayors for a Day,” says Mayor Kermit Dahl. “Local Government Awareness Week is an opportunity to connect with residents about the roles and responsibilities of local government. What better way than welcoming the voters of the future for a behind-the-scenes tour of City facilities and exploring how we’re working to deliver and maintain programs, services, amenities, and infrastructure for residents? I hope Alaina and Benson remain curious, engaged and invested in their community and its wellbeing and inspire their classmates, family and friends to get involved too.”

Campbell River is on the unceded territory of the Laich-Kwil-Tach people of the Wei Wai Kum and We Wai Kai First Nations. The municipality was incorporated as a village in 1947 and incorporated as a city in 2005. To learn more about the City of Campbell River, visit www.campbellriver.ca.
