Register today for intermediate-level throwing and other summer programming.
Local pottery enthusiasts have used the City of Campbell River Pottery Studio since 2001. Open studio sessions and beginner classes help hundreds learn the basics of pottery and advance their skills with clay. Classes and open studio sessions traditionally run from September to June annually, but this year the popularity has sparked a new summer programming schedule!
Potters with experience throwing clay can sign up for a six-week Intermediate Potter's Wheel class at the Community Centre on Wednesday evenings, from August 17, 2022, to September 28, 2022. Registration is open and available online at
www.campbellriver.ca, over the phone at 250-286-1161 or at the Community Centre.
Instructor Emma Heitzmann added the Intermediate Potter's Wheel class and is already the favourite teacher for many pottery students. Emma studied ceramic arts at North Island College and began practising her craft in the Community Centre in 2012. She became a volunteer for pottery open studio times in 2014 and has taught regular classes since 2018.
“Clay work is often grounding and meditative, there's not a lot else you can focus on while working and learning, so it can be a good de-stressing activity,” says pottery teacher Emma Heitzmann. “It is nice to see former students experience this and come back having progressed on their own!”
“The class is the perfect length to practice and advance throwing and trimming,” says pottery student Marissa Dederer. “There's more time to create pieces and opportunity for discussion around what to keep and why we like each piece versus keeping everything we make as novices on the wheel. I recommend this class to anyone looking for teacher support while practising wheel throwing skills.”
A six-week basic skills and hand-building pottery class starts Tuesday, September 20, 2022. Pottery Studio will take place Thursdays from 6 to 9 p.m. and Fridays from 1 to 4 p.m., beginning Thursday, September 29, and Fridays as of October 7, 2022. Introduction to the Wheel will begin on Wednesday, October 12, with registration opening on August 19, 2022. For information on any City recreational programming, visit
