The City of Campbell River has applied to the Provincial Government to remove the Crown Grant restrictions at 1235 Shoppers Row, Campbell River, BC (where the Centennial Building is located).
Crown Grant restrictions limit the use of this land to museum, library, or tourism bureau purposes, which means that the City is not currently in compliance. If restrictions are removed the current use will be brought into compliance and it will allow the City flexibility on potential future changes to the properties.
The City has been exploring opportunities to make changes to this area as part of downtown revitalization efforts. Community Safety and Downtown Revitalization are top priorities for Council. The City is working to foster a safe, comfortable, and inclusive environment so that all residents and visitors can use and enjoy public spaces. Current tenants have also noted that building design and layout challenges are impacting visitor numbers.
As part of the application process, signage must be placed on site and notifications shared with the community. No formal decisions have been made about the future of the Centennial Building but this is a necessary next step in the process to remove Crown Grant restrictions.
Information on the application, including the file number, how to submit feedback, and where to go for more information, may be found in the Notice of Intention to Apply for a Disposition of Crown Land below.
