Residents evacuated from 738 and 758 Island Hwy S and the site is secure.
The City would like to update residents on the landslide that occurred at approximately 7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 17, 2023, at 738 Island Hwy S. The buildings at 738 and 758 Island Hwy S were evacuated as a precautionary measure and accommodation was provided for those who requested it. The City asks the public to avoid the properties affected.
No injuries were reported and the surrounding area is secure. The City continues to monitor the site and is aware of a minor subsequent slide that poses no immediate safety concerns. Subject matter experts are being brought in to confirm the stability. Public safety is the City's top priority, and no further evacuations are deemed necessary at this time.
A Reception Centre has been activated upstairs in the Dogwood Room of the Strathcona Gardens Recreation Centre for the residents who have been displaced. It opened at 10 a.m. and will remain in place until 2 p.m. on Wednesday, January 18, 2022. It is being staffed by professionally trained Emergency Support Services Volunteers to support the basic needs of the people who have been displaced. Residents of the evacuated buildings are encouraged to contact the Strathcona Regional District Emergency Support Service program at campbellriveress@gmail.com or 250-203-1972 with any questions or support needed.
