Meet the Driftwood Divas, Campbell River artists who dedicate their creative efforts to community change.

This group of women first rallied together to protect the heritage home of legendary international artist Sybil Andrews.

“Us ladies, we would have laid down in front of the bulldozers,” says Mary Teer, an integral member of the group that then raised $ 5,000 for Sybil Andrews cottage restoration.

 The Divas meet once a month at the now-restored cottage to work together on a variety of art projects – from driftwood delights to collages made of recycled materials. Their creative efforts go into fundraising for others, with pieces donated for auction at community events or sold at craft sales, with a portion of funds donated to local charities.

"We are a charitable group, and we like to get things done. We know how to fundraise, that’s for sure,” Mary says.”

The Driftwood Divas believe that art is to be shared for the benefit of all. Two years ago, they created a colouring book and donated 25 copies to the women’s centre and another 10 to the Salvation Army.

This dedicated group is inspired by “the place where we live, the people of Campbell River and the helpful neighbours,” Mary adds.

Campbell River has a long history of community-boosting groups, and the Driftwood Divas are focused on making big changes.

For the City-owned 3.5-acre waterfront lot, Mary’s wants to see a public space developed.

“We have a wonderful waterfront, and we need lots of access to it,” she says. “The 3.5-acres is the heart linking all the waterfront amenities.”

Big thanks to the Driftwood Divas for all they do for positive change in Campbell River.

Open house event Tuesday, Sept. 12 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Campbell River Community Centre Lounge (401-11th Ave.) will present the Waterfront Task Force’s vision for the 3.5 acre site that has grown through the public consultation process and incorporates the community’s ideas. The long-term planning and development framework for this property will also be shared. There will be an opportunity for public feedback.
