The waterfront sewer forcemain, built in 1972, is a critical piece of infrastructure that needs to be replaced to support new growth in the community and help protect the waterfront. Work on Phase 1 of the Waterfront Sewer Project included installation of a new gravity sewer main, between the Maritime Heritage Centre and 1st Avenue, and was completed in December 2018.
Repaving of the temporary pavement in this stretch is set to begin on April 23, and last two weeks (weather dependent). Expect delays and lane closures through the area – the use of alternate routes is recommended.
Phase 2 – Further work on this project will continue in 2019, extending the new sewer installation from 1st Avenue to near the Big Rock Boat Ramp. In 2020, two new lift stations are scheduled to be constructed – sites are not yet confirmed.
Getting Around During Construction
Work has started on Hwy 19A between 1st Ave and Rockland Road. While two lanes of traffic will often be maintained, there will be periods of single-lane alternating traffic or even temporary stops in both directions as services are connected from one side of the road to the other.
Remember: alternative routes are your best option for the coming months. Please reroute where possible
