The waterfront sewer main, built in 1972, is a critical piece of infrastructure that needs to be replaced to support new growth in the community and help protect the waterfront. Work on Phase 1 of the Waterfront Sewer Project was completed in December 2018, and included installation of a new sewer main between the Maritime Heritage Centre and 1st Avenue.
Work on Phase 2 of the project is underway now. It will extend the new sewer installation from 1st Avenue to near the Big Rock Boat Ramp. Construction work will generally move from south to north along the route, and is expected to be complete in Fall 2019.
In 2020, two new lift stations are scheduled to be constructed – sites are not yet confirmed.
Getting Around During Construction
Work has started on Hwy 19A between 1st Ave and Rockland Road. For the coming four weeks (mid-July to mid-August) single-lane alternating traffic will be required for a stretch of work near Rockland Road. The reduced laneway is a result of ground conditions which require the location of the new pipe to be amended. Continue to watch here for updates on traffic management.
Alternative routes are your best option for the coming months. See a map of alternative route options here: Alternate Routes Map
